During the closing ceremony of the 6th Congress of the Portuguese Committee of URSI, held on 16 November 2012, Helder Vasconcelos, member of ANACOM's Management Board, presented the ANACOM-URSI Portugal Prize and the Best Student Paper Award, awards instituted with the aim of encouraging creativity and rigor in scientific research work in Portugal.
The ANACOM-URSI Portugal Prize was awarded to Jorge Manuel Gonçalves Baptista dos Santos, from EURATOM / Instituto Superior Técnico (Higher Technical Institute), for his work ''Microwaves used for the first time in the position control of a fusion machine''. An honourable mention was also awarded to Joana Santos Silva, Instituto de Telecomunicações (Telecommunications Institute) and ISCTE - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (Lisbon University Institute), for her work ''Compact antennas based on lenses with steerable beam to Earth terminals in Ka-band''.
Finally, the Best Student Paper Award was awarded to Diogo Ribeiro of Instituto de Telecomunicações (Telecommunications Institute) of Aveiro, for his paper ''Evaluation of comb generator performance for nonlinear measurements on mixed-domain instrumentation''.
