By decision of the Government (Resolution of Council of Ministers no. 2/2013, published in Diário da República (Official Journal) on 10 January 2013, provision of the maritime mobile service by PT Comunicações S.A., as a public service, is to be discontinued as from 30 April 2013.
Under the same resolution, ANACOM is bound, as part of its remit to provide assistance to the Government, to ensure that the decision is properly disseminated to the public. As such, on 27 January 2013, notices were published in the following newspapers: Correio da Manhã, Jornal de Notícias, Público, Diário de Notícias da Madeira and Açoriano Oriental.
The widespread dissemination of this decision is also being supported by a number of other organisations involved in the contact network established for this purpose; these include all Port Administrations and General-Directorates, IPTM - Instituto Portuário e dos Transportes Marítimos (Port and Maritime Transport Institute), DGAM - Direcção-Geral da Autoridade Marítima (Maritime Authority Directorate-General), APP - Associação dos Portos de Portugal (Portuguese Ports Association), Instituto Hidrográfico (Hydrographic Institute), Naval Command - Centre of Naval operations, and APPR - Associação Portuguesa de Portos de Recreio (Portuguese Association of Leisure Harbours).
