Express mail handles 10 million traffic items

In 4th quarter 2012 (4Q12), total postal services traffic in Portugal comprised approximately 242.7 million items - about 23 postal items per capita. This represents an increase of 6.5 percent compared to 3Q12. The reported variations are within the forecast range that results from the historical trend and from estimated seasonal effects. In the last quarter of each year there is generally a seasonal increase in traffic volume.

Express mail traffic reached 10 million items, corresponding to 4.1 percent of total traffic and increasing 16 percent over the quarter. Non-express mail traffic, which constitutes the majority of traffic, increased by 95.9 percent, increasing by 6.1 percent compared to 3Q12.

In the period being reported, 95.9 percent of all distributed items were destined for the domestic market, while the remaining 4.1 percent were destined for other countries. About 96.1 percent of postal traffic is made up of correspondence, direct mail and editorial mail. Postal parcels represent only 3.9 percent of total traffic.

Grupo CTT has a market share of 95.3 percent of total postal traffic, whereas no other provider has a share of total traffic exceeding 1 percent. In the express mail segment, the alternative providers had more significant shares of traffic, together exceeding CTT's share of 27.3 percent. There are three providers, Chronopost, Grupo Rangel and General Logistics Systems, with individual traffic shares exceeding 5 percent.

Total revenues generated from postal services were reported at 207.4 million euros, which represents an increase of 9.5 percent compared to 3Q12. About 35.6 percent of revenues related to express mail.

In 4Q12, 15 thousand people were employed in postal services, 713 fewer than in the previous quarter and 403 fewer than in the same quarter of the previous year (4Q11).  This reduction is a directly related to the indicators reported by the companies of Grupo CTT. A downward trend is observed, both in terms of total sector employment and in terms of indicators measuring the postal network.
