ANACOM takes over Presidency of BEREC in 2015

The chair of ANACOM's Management Board, Ms. Fátima Barros, has been elected president of the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC) for 2015. The election took place on 6 December at BEREC's 17th Plenary meeting, in Budapest (Hungary). This important position is taken on by a woman for the first time.

Ms. Fátima Barros will assume the vice-presidency in 2014 and also in 2016, to ensure the continuity of work.

BEREC's Board of Regulators is composed of one member per each Member State of the European Union (EU), a high level representative of the electronic communications National Regulatory Authority (NRA), with primary responsibility for regulating and overseeing the operation of the markets for networks and services.

As President of BEREC, Ms. Fátima Barros will be responsible, among other tasks, for drafting and ensuring the implementation of BEREC's work programme for 2015, to convene and lead plenary meetings of the Board of Regulators and for representing BEREC in several European and international institutions.

In the course of that election, Ms. Fátima Barros was also elected as President of BEREC's Management Committee, the administrative body that monitors the Office, and which is also composed of one member per Member State, a high level representative of the NRA, and two members representing the European Commission (EC).

Ms. Fátima Barros shall also take on the Presidency of the Independent Regulators Group - the IRG - a Belgian private-law association that gathers electronic communication NRAs of the 28 EU Member States, of countries of the European Economic Area (EEA) and of candidate countries to the EU.

In 2014, BEREC's presidency will be taken over by Göran Marby, from the Swedish Post and Telecom Agency (PTS).
