3rd meeting of the working group for the 2016-2019 Strategic and Financial Plans - Geneva

Geneva hosted last 27-28 February the third meeting of the ITU Council’s working group for preparation of the Union’s strategic and financial plans for the 2016-2019 period.

The group chaired by Mario Canazza of Brazil worked on completing the text of both plans, as well as a glossary of main terms used, which will be presented at the 2014 session of the ITU Council (Geneva, 6-15 May) for approval.

The group also reviewed results of the public consultation which gathered suggestions from all sector stakeholders. The 17 responses received focused on the need for the ITU to be a more inclusive organisation and for the multi-stakeholder model to be strengthened. The public consultation also identified cyber-security, climate change and the need for modified convergence regulations as priority areas.

Note that at the meeting’s opening session ITU Secretary-General Hamadoun Touré asked members not to try to prevent the inclusion of activities associated to internet governance in the Union’s Strategic Plan. He recalled that regardless of rumours about the ITU’s eventual intention to obtain more control in such matters, the Union has a role in internet governance and its activity complements that of other entities.
