World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2014

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is celebrated in Portugal this year, on an exceptional basis on 16 May, given that 17 May (official day) falls on a Saturday. The Day's theme, as defined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), is "Broadband for Sustainable Development".

The ITU chose this theme to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, with the aim of achieving universal access to broadband.

In Portugal, the celebrations took place at FPC - Fundação Portuguesa das Comunicações (Portuguese Communications Foundation).

Therefore, FPC, in conjunction with FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (Foundation for Science and Technology), APDC - Associação Portuguesa para o Desenvolvimento das Comunicaçõe (Portuguese Communications Development Association) and APDSI - Associação para a Promoção e Desenvolvimento da Sociedade da Informação (Association for the Promotion and Development of the Information Society), organized a series of debating sessions about issues related to the Day's theme. One of these sessions (APDC/APDSI) - on "broadband as a support to sustainable socio-economic development" - was attended by the vice-chairman of ANACOM's Management Board, José Perdigoto, who spoke at the session and also took part in the institutional session.

The initiatives promoted in this context include the inauguration at FPC of the exhibitions "Habitat XXI - Wherever I am, I feel at home", "Digital Transformation - The Sky is not the Limit" and "Generation C - All Connected - From the Abacus to the Cloud", as well as the visiting exhibition of sculpture by Rui Matos.
