Trends in telecommunications prices - August 2017

Summary

  • In August 2017, telecommunications prices in Portugal1 were unchanged from the previous month (no change in August 2016).

    In year-on-year terms, the increase in prices (3.40%) was the 11th highest among the sectors of the Portuguese economy.

    On average annual terms, prices increased by 2.87%, 1.73 percentage points over inflation (1.13%). The increase in prices was the 9th highest among the 43 products/services considered.

    Since January 2014, telecommunications prices1 have been increasing at average annual rates above the rate of change reported in CPI.
  • On average annual terms, Portugal was the EU country with the fourth highest increase in prices in August 2017. On average, telecommunications prices1 in the EU fell by 0.54%.

    Since March 2011, telecommunications prices1 have increased more in Portugal than in the EU.

1. Trends in telecommunications prices1 - August 2017

According to INE (Statistics Portugal)2, in August 2017, telecommunications prices in Portugal were unchanged from the previous month (unchanged in August 2016)1.

Versus August 2016, telecommunications prices1 increased by 3.40%, while increasing by 2.87% on average over the last twelve months.

On a year-on-year basis, the increase in prices (3.40%) was the 11th highest among the sectors of the Portuguese economy. The difference between this increase and the change in CPI was reported at 2.27 percentage points

On average terms, the annual increase in prices reported (2.87%) was the 9th highest among 43 products/service considered.

Since January 2014, telecommunications prices1 have been increasing at average annual rates above the rate of change reported in CPI. In August 2017, the difference between the two rates was reported at 1.73 percentage points

2. Trends in telecommunications prices1 in the EU3 - August 2017

According to EUROSTAT4, in August 2017, the increase in prices in average annual terms reported in Portugal was 3.41 percentage points above the EU average3. On average annual terms, Portugal was the EU country with the fourth highest increase in prices. The countries with larger increases than in Portugal were Latvia, Belgium and Finland.

Compared to July 2016, the variation in telecommunications prices1 in Portugal was the second highest among the EU3,5

Since April 2011, telecommunications prices1 have risen more in Portugal than in the EU3 (in terms of average annual change).
