ANACOM Chairman participates in the conference of presentation of the winning articles of the prize ''Competition in the markets''


On 4 May 2018, ANACOM Chairman João Cadete de Matos participated in the conference to present the winning articles in the "Competition in the markets" competition, a joint initiative of the Office of Strategy and Studies (GEE) of the Ministry of the Economy, Associação Mutualista Montepio Geral and the Nova School of Business and Economics.

In his speech at the opening session, ANACOM’s Chairman spoke about competition in the communications, electronic and postal markets. Innovation, net neutrality and the new international submarine cable system were highlighted for their importance in encouraging competition in the sector.

Besides the Chairman of ANACOM and the authors of the winning works, the ceremony was attended by Luis Cabral, Professor at New York University; Ricardo Pinheiro Alves, Director of the Office of Strategy and Studies of the Ministry of the Economy; Antonio Tomás Correia, Chairman of the Associação Mutualista Montepio; and Steffen Hoernig, Academic Director of the Masters in Economics at Nova SBE.

The following works were distinguished:

  • "Competition effect on innovation and productivity - the Portuguese case", by Anabela Santos, Michele Cincera, Paulo Neto and Maria Manuel Serrano;
  • "Measuring the benefits and costs of intermediation in vertical relations", by Javier D. Donna, Pedro Pereira, Tiago Pires and André Trindade;
  • “Of course collusion should be prosecuted. But maybe ... Or (the case for international antitrust agreements”, by Filomena Garcia, Jose Manuel Paz y Miño and Gustavo Torrens; and
  • “Product market competition and gender discrimination”, by Dudley Cooke, Ana P. Fernandes and Priscila Ferreira.
