ANACOM on the island of Flores to check the state of communications

The Chairman of ANACOM's Board of Directors, João Cadete de Matos, visited the island of Flores in the Azores, on Monday and Tuesday, where he held talks with local authorities about the problems affecting the island in terms of communications. In a meeting, the Mayor of Santa Cruz das Flores, José Carlos Pimentel Mendes, pointed out the lack of mobile network and Internet coverage as the main problem, and also mentioned the mislaying of postal items. These are concerns that are shared by the municipality of Lajes das Flores.

The Chairman of ANACOM noted how important it is that the country's remote regions, such as the island of Flores, have good telecommunications and postal services. He also argued for the timely replacement of submarine cables serving the Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira and the sharing of infrastructure, as two of the solutions that can respond to the concerns raised.

At the meeting with the Council of Santa Cruz das Flores, ANACOM’s Chairman also highlighted the important contribution that submarine cables can make to the detection of earthquakes and tsunamis, as well as to the performance of oceanographic studies. Infrastructure-sharing (such as national roaming) was also indicated as a way of responding to the lack of mobile network and Internet coverage affecting several locations on the island of Flores.

ANACOM’s Chairman also took part in the X Ibero-Atlantic Conference on Regional Statistics, held on the theme of "Tourism Statistics" and taking place in Angra do Heroísmo and Santa Cruz das Flores, on 22 and 23 October respectively.
