The 16th meeting of the Radio Spectrum Committee was held on 29-30 June in Brussels.
The following stand out among the issues dealt with at this meeting:
- Short Range Devices (SRDs) ? Consensus was reached on a European Commission (EC) draft decision on spectrum harmonisation for such applications, following the process of approval in writing. Also approved was a new permanent mandate for the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT), with a view to annually revising the annex to the Decision which contains the technical characteristics and frequency bands for such equipment;
- Radio Frequency Identification Devices (RFID) ? Relative consensus was achieved on an EC draft decision on spectrum harmonisation for such applications, following the approval in writing process;
- 25 GHz Short Range Radars ? A proposal with a method to monitor the vehicles equipped with such equipment imported by each member State every year was debated;
- Wireless Access Policy for Electronic Communications Services (WAPECS) ? A mandate was approved for CEPT which indicates the frequency bands which are candidates for the feasibility study;
- Ultra Wide Band (UWB) ? A mandate was approved for CEPT to formulate an opinion on frequency aspects and a draft EC Decision was debated;
- 2 GHz Mobile Satellite Service (MSS) ? A draft EC Decision was debated, which may be approved at the next meeting;
- Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) ? A mandate was approved for CEPT to formulate an opinion on frequency aspects;
- GSM Directive ? The possibility of amending this Directive was debated in order to assess the legal possibilities regarding introduction of third generation (3G) systems in the GSM bands. This subject was included in the WAPECS mandate.
