WTSA-08 - Opening


On the opening day of the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which is taking place until October 30 in Johannesburg (South Africa), the Director General of the  South Africa's Department of Communications, Lyndall Shope-Mafole, was appointed Chair of the WTSA-08, being the first woman to secure this position.

Additionally, the following regional vice-chairs were named:

  • Vince AFFLECK (UK)
  • David GROSS (USA)
  • Yukio HIRAMATSU (Japan)
  • Nabil KISRAWI (Syria)
  • Naum MARDER (Russian Federation) 

In the first day of work the Director of the TSB (Telecommunication Standardization Bureau), Malcolm Johnson, presented the report of the activities of the Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T), covering several initiatives: the decision to make online access to the Recommendations of the ITU-T free of charge; the harmonisation of child telephone helplines; and the Emmy Award for Excellence awarded by the United State Academy of Television Arts and Sciences to the ITU, to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)for their work in producing an advanced video coding standard, formally known as Recommendation ITU-T H.264 | ISO/IEC Standard 14496-10 on Advanced Video Coding (AVC).
