Network of postal establishments - 1st half of 2009

ANACOM has released the report, with respect to the 1st half of 2009, on the network of postal establishments of CTT - Correios de Portugal, S.A. (CTT), the concessionaire company of the universal postal service.

In the period being reported, there were 2882 postal establishments in operation, 9 more than at the end of 2008.  Of these establishments, there were 888 post offices, 12 mobile post offices and 1982 postal service offices.  The report’s data shows a slight increase in the total number of postal establishments, extending the upward seen since the second half of 2008, resulting from an increase in the number of postal service offices.  This trend offsets a drop in the number of permanent post offices, which continues to decline.

The report shows that there was at least one post office located within each municipality, while in 292 municipalities (94.8 per cent of the total) there were two or more postal establishments, a term which encompasses not just post offices but also postal services offices. All post offices provide the full range of concession services while 45.6 per cent of postal service offices do not offer parcel services.

In comparison with other Member States of the European Union (EU), and according to data provided by the Universal Postal Union (UPU) for 2007, the situation in Portugal compares favourably to the EU average, both in terms of coverage and in terms of density of permanent postal establishments.

Under the terms of the Concession of the Universal Postal Service, during the first half of 2009, ANACOM received 19 notifications from CTT, as follows: 4 in respect of the closure of post offices and their replacement by postal service offices, 11 regarding reductions in post office working hours; and 4 regarding other alterations to post office working hours (which do not imply a reduction in the daily timetable).
