EC launches consultation on future spectrum policy - closes 9 April

The European Commission (EC) has launched a public consultation on the strategic priorities for a European Union radio spectrum policy programme for 2011-2015. Additionally, on 22 and 23 March 2010, the Commission and the European Parliament will hold a joint “Spectrum Summit” to discuss Europe’s priorities in this area.

Access to the radio spectrum is essential for a broad range of activities from telephony and broadcasting to space applications and transport, and can also constitute a driver for the European economy. Accordingly, the EC has invited all interested parties to participate in this consultation, focusing their comments on the following issues:

  • Economic recovery and growth;
  • Social inclusion and services for citizens;
  • Environmental and health protection;
  • Space applications and transport safety;
  • Coordination and negotiations at international level;
  • Re-assignment of spectrum (refarming) and competition.;

The results of this consultation will help the Commission formulate a radio spectrum policy programme, which will be presented to the European Parliament and the Council in mid 2010.
