Inquiry on broadband Internet access in Portugal - 2004


ICP-ANACOM promoted an inquiry on the consumption of broadband Internet access in Portugal, which took place between October and December 2004.

This inquiry aimed at characterizing this type of consumption, at identifying the main barriers to the subscription of broadband and at evaluating the perception concerning the quality of the broadband Internet access service.

The main conclusions indicate that:

- in December last year, 17.3% of Portuguese homes had broadband;

- the percentage of broadband users is higher amongst professionals and in higher socio-economic stratus and the percentage of broadband homes in the coastal areas of the country is significantly higher than inland;

- the main reasons that the inquired people gave not to subscribe any Internet service are: "have no interest " (41,9%), "have no need" (28%), "high price" (13,6%) and "have no computer" (9,8%), with a significant percentage of those who refer having “no interest"/"no need" of the Internet who do not have a computer;

- it was not possible to identify a specific geographic area in which, according to the opinion of the inquired people, the geographic coverage is reduced; and

- the factor that presents greater degree of correlation with the subscription of broadband Internet access at home is the existence of a student at home and the level of education that he/she is attending.

The collection and codification of data took place between 19th October and 13th December 2004. The method of inquiry was telephone interviews to Portuguese families with fixed telephone. In total, 4711 interviews were made, including 794 interviews to broadband users.
