Conclusions from the Council of Transports, Telecommunications and Energy of the EU

The Council of Transports, Telecommunications and Energy of the European Union (EU) met on the 27th and 28th of June. Several decisions in the scope of telecommunications resulted from this meeting, especially regarding the i2010 strategy and the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).

Regarding the i2010 strategy, the Council reaffirmed the principles stated on the i2010 Communication - an information society for growth and employment, recently adopted by the Commission, which presents a strategic framework for the development of the information society in the European Union until 2010. It is expected that the works related with the implementation of this strategy continue during the British presidency of the EU.

Regarding the WSIS, the Council took into account, among other information, the Communication of the Commission Towards a Global Partnership in the Information Society: The Contribution of the European Union to the Second Phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), which presents the main issues to be considered in the scope of the negotiations leading to the 2nd phase of WSIS, which will take place in Tunes, Tunisia, from the 16th to the 18th of November next. In this scope, the Council invited the member States to take a constructive and dynamic role in the preparation process of the Tunes Summit and to approve the financial mechanisms in the framework of the Summit’s Preparatory Committee (whose meeting will take place in Geneva, from the 19th to the 30th of September 2005); to contribute to the works regarding the international management of the Internet; and to reaffirm its commitment in the defence of the respect of human rights, specially regarding freedoms of expression and of opinion.
