4th meeting of PT47 of WG FM - London

The London offices of Ofcom (United Kingdom) hosted last 16-17 March the fourth meeting of project team (PT) 47 of the Frequency Management working group (WG FM), chaired by Emmanuel Faussurier.

The gathering was devoted solely to specific UWB applications, with regulatory solutions under study for the following applications:

  1. LAES (Location Tracking Application for Emergency Services) in the 3.4-4.8 GHz band;
  2. LT2 (Location Tracking Applications Type 2) in the 3.4-4.8 GHz and 6-8.5 GHz bands;
  3. LTSA-AT (Location Tracking and Sensor Applications for Automotive and Transportation environments) in the 3-1-4.8 GHz and 6-8.5 GHz bands;
  4. Airborne UWB applications in the 3.1-4.8 GHz and 6-8.5 GHz bands.

PT24 of the Spectrum Engineering working group (WG SE), which carried out compatibility studies to support regulatory solutions being developed by FM47, aims to produce two ECC reports, one for applications 1, 2 and 3 and the other for application 4:

  • ECC Report on ''Studies Relating to UWB as Described in Annex to CEPT Report 34 (excluding airborne UWB)'';
  • ECC Report on ''Airborne UWB in the Frequency Bands 3.1-4.8 GHz and 6-8.5 GHz''.

UWB LT2 applications were debated in a more detailed manner, based on a document from a correspondence group co-ordinated by Portugal. One possible regulatory solution may include the use of a database. This issue will continue to be discussed in a correspondence group co-ordinated by Portugal. Regarding generic UWB devices, their definition was also made clear and sent to ETSI.

Note that at the 65th WG FM meeting, held on 9-13 February 2009 in Cascais, Portugal, it was decided that WG FM PT47 would handle issues involving ultra wide band (UWB) technology. This project team is in charge of responding to the second European Commission (EC) mandate on short range radars (SRR) and to the fourth EC mandate on specific UWB applications.
