EDPS - Opinion on RFID

The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) has published an opinion on the European Commission (EC) communication of March 2007 on radio frequency identification (RFID).

The EDPS considers that the EC communication tackles the main issues arising in the context of the deployment of RFID technology without neglecting the determinant ones related to privacy and data protection. It agrees with the EC that in a first phase it is appropriate to leave room for self-regulation, while estimating that a need could arise for the adoption of additional legislative measures in respect of privacy and data protection.

In the document, the EDPS asks the EC to consider a range of recommendations, including with regard to the provision of clear guidelines on the correct application of the regulatory framework in terms of RFID and adoption of community legislation necessary for the correct application of the current regulatory framework.
