ENISA Position Paper on botnets

The European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) has recently published its third position paper entitled ''Botnets - The Silent Threat''. A botnet is a network of computers on which a bot, a programme without user intervention, has been installed. This network is managed remotely from a server and is used for fraudulent activities, especially identity theft, scams and spamming.

Besides emphasising that the botnet threat is real and serious one, the document sets out a number of recommendations which Member States of the European Union should implement in order to combat this menace. These include the conclusion of coordination agreements for the harmonisation of cybercrime legislation, raising awareness among policy markets and computer users and the strengthening of cooperation between law enforcement agencies and private companies.
