WRC-07 - World Radiocommunication Conference 2007

Having opened on 22 October, the World Radiocommunication Conference 2007 (WRC-07) is currently underway in Geneva, Switzerland, closing on 16 November. ANACOM is leading the delegation that is representing Portugal at the conference.

The conference's objective is to addresses issues connected to the world’s use of radio frequencies and aims to answer world's spectrum needs. This is an issue that is closely connected to the rapid technological development and growth seen in the information and communication technology sector.

The agenda of the WRC-07 also includes the analysis of ways to improve the international spectrum regulatory framework. To this end, current, emerging and future developments of applications, systems and technologies are to be examined in order to ascertain the growth needs of the spectrum. This growth is seen as an inevitable consequence of the ongoing convergence of radiocommunications services and the rapid change seen in terms of regulation.

The proportioning of the radio spectrum will also be negotiated at the spectrum, above all for sectors in which its application is important, such as mobile communications, broadcasting and air transport.

The world radiocommunication conferences (WRC) are essential for the functioning of the Radiocommunications sector of the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) and are normally held every 2 or 3 years.
