EC launches public consultation on net neutrality

The European Commission (EC) has launched a public consultation on the theme of net neutrality - interested parties, including providers of services and content, consumers, companies and researchers, may send comments, no later than 30 September 2010.

Through this consultation, the EC is seeking better knowledge of the problems associated with certain forms of Internet traffic management and to know if the new regulatory framework for telecommunications is sufficient to resolve such problems; in addition, the EC aims to compile information on technical and economic aspects, issues of quality of service and the possibility that freedoms on the internet may be affected.

Based on the results obtained from the public consultation and based on the opinions expressed in other forums, the Commission will present a report on network neutrality by the end of 2010. The EC notes that an open and neutral Internet is a key and basic condition for many of the objective of the Digital Agenda for Europe.
