''116'' Europe-wide freephone number - consultation launched

The European Commission has launched a public consultation to identify common Europe-wide telephone services of social value that could benefit from single European freephone numbers starting with 116.

The consultation, which opened on 20 March, follows the Commission’s Decision 2007/116/EC of 15 February requiring Member States to reserve the six-digit number range starting with 116 for services of social value in Europe. The first such number for missing children hotlines, 116000, was also reserved by this Decision.

This next step is to identify other telephone services that could also benefit from having a single, free Europe-wide number. And it is to this end that all interested parties are invited to contribute to the debate by participating in this consultation, putting forward their views, suggestions and other relevant information.

Interested parties can send their comments by email to INFSO-116numbers@ec.europa.eu with the subject "116 numbers". The closing date for the consultation is 20 May 2007.
