Electronic Communications Consumer Survey

The report on the key findings of the latest electronic communications consumer survey has been released. The survey, which refers to December 2006, looks in particular at consumer habits with regard to the telephone service at a fixed location (FTS), the mobile telephone service (MTS) and the subscription television service.

Among the results of the survey, one of the key findings is that around 59.2 per cent of Portuguese households had a fixed-line telephone in December 2006, while 4.2 per cent of those respondents who did not, stated that it was their intention to subscribe to the FTS within one year. The use of mobile phones and the monthly charge were cited as being the main reasons for not having a fixed-line telephone (75.3 and 19.5 per cent respectively). These reasons are in line with those given in the February 2006 survey but have seen an increase of 14.1 and 3 per cent.

According to the collected data, around 82.2 per cent of households with fixed-line network are customers of PT Comunicações, followed by Tele2 and Cabovisão with 13.1 and 7.4 per cent respectively of the share of FTS customers

The general perception of the quality of the fixed network remains positive and is considered as being good or very good by 94.9 per cent of those surveyed.

With respect to the mobile telephone service, around 87.7 per cent of those surveyed had a mobile phone in December 2006, which represents a rise of 3.2 per cent over February. The possibility of always being contactable and mobility were given as the main advantages of the MTS over the FTS, according to 49.1 and 39.9 per cent of those surveyed.

The survey also reports that TMN is the operator with the largest share of customers, around 45.3 per cent, followed by Vodafone with 38.7 and Optimus with 14.7 per cent.

The quality of the MTS is also considered to be good or very good by 97.9 per cent of those surveyed.

Finally the survey looked at the subscription television service, finding, that in December 2006, 43.3 per cent of Portuguese households had subscription television, with TV Cabo being the main operator with 76.1 per cent, followed by Cabovisão with 16.1 per cent.

This survey, which was carried out by ANACOM and MARKTEST, between 9 November and 29 December 2006, follows the survey published in February 2006 (which only covered FTS and MTS).

In terms of the methodology used for the survey, the population targeted were individuals of either sex, aged 15 or over, resident in Continental Portugal and the Autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores. The sample was structured by region and residence, with selection performed by quota of sex, age, education and occupation. In total 2,519 interviews were carried out, of which 997 were done by mobile phone and 1522 by fixed-line.
