European Commission establishes expert group on electronic commerce - Brussels

As per its decision of 24 October 2005, the European Commission established an expert group on electronic commerce aiming at promoting a new discussion forum on the issues related with the application of the electronic commerce Directive (Directive no. 2000/31/CE). It is hoped that the group will foster and facilitate the co-operation between Member States and the European Commission in this scope. Broadly, it will be this new expert group’s main mission to provide consultancy to the European Commission on the domains covered by this Directive.

The group already held its first meeting on 17 November in Brussels, for which the national contact points on electronic commerce matters from each Member State were summoned. Amongst these was the Portuguese contact appointed by ANACOM, the central supervision entity on this domain.

This meeting discussed several issues arising from the application of the Directive, namely in connection with orders that restrain the information society services’ freedom of circulation, self-regulation and the responsibility of intermediary service providers.
