European Commission launches public consultation on the future of postal services

Interested parties may participate until 27 January 2006 on the public consultation launched by the European Commission on the future of postal services.

The consultation is made up of two parts. The first one is a questionnaire covering issues of general interest; whilst the second part contains more detailed questions and covers several issues that have an impact on the postal sector. This second part, which is optional, is of special interest to, among others, the social partners, consumers and industrial business associations.

The Commission intends to evaluate the opportunity for initiatives in this market, with the provision of modern postal services in mind. In this context, it should be stressed that after 1 January 2006 the price and weight limits of the reserved postal area should be reduced (respectively, to two and a half times the public tariff of a correspondence of the first weigh class of the fastest normalized category and of 50 grams). Also noteworthy, the Commission should present until 31 December 2006 a report and a proposal confirming or not 2009 as the data for the full accomplishment of the postal services’ internal market.

The results of this public consultation will be later released on the “Your Voice in Europe” website.
