Commission launches site on the costs of the roaming service in Europe

The European Commission launched, on 4 October, a new website that aims to provide consumers with information on the tariffs of the roaming service. This is the tool for users to make informed choices every time they use mobile phones abroad, thereby increasing tariff transparency and competition in the mobile services.

The website gives consumers samples of the tariffs practiced by all mobile service providers in the 25 Member States to several destinations, thus not contemplating the list of all tariffs in force in the European space.

The aim is also to make it easier for consumers to access further information, with direct links to the Internet addresses of all European Union mobile service providers, in which the corresponding tariffs can be found, and with other useful contacts for getting more elements, such as advice on how to get the best conditions and contact points to use should issues arise or to make claims.

The website presents the prices for the roaming services in force in September 2005 and will be updated every six months.

This initiative by the Commission is complemented by the work of the 25 national telecommunications regulatory authorities, which co-operate with the Commission’s services regarding the roaming services' tariffs.
