Software, telecommunications and services industry announces launch of new European technology platform NESSI

The launch of the new European technology platform Networked European Software and Services Initiative (NESSI) was announced on 7 September.

The thirteen founding member companies of this initiative are Atos Origin, BT, Engineering, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Nokia, ObjectWeb, SAP, Siemens, Software AG, Telecom Italia, Telefonica and Thales.

NESSI intends to supply a unified vision for the European research in service architectures and software infrastructures. These will define technologies, strategies and deployment policies, fostering industrial solutions and new and open social applications, increasing the citizens’ security, stability and well-being. In this scope, it will allow European companies to reach flexible business models and to compete in an increasingly aggressive global commercial environment, also benefiting the citizens by widening the range of available user friendly services and guaranteeing privacy and security.

The Commissioner for Information Society and Media believes that this initiative will have the potential to strengthen European competitiveness in many sectors of the economy and is a very practical step in the implementation of the i2010 strategy for growth and jobs in Europe.
