One of the challenges identified in the 2004 Information Technology Outlook recently published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is to assure more effective and productive integration of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in business processes.
This report analyses the recent evolution of ICTs in OECD member countries’ economies, with particular emphasis on globalisation, the way ICTs are used, kinds of internet-accessed services and emerging technologies, from nanotechnology to WiFi, and covering new anti-spam defences.
Besides reviewing the current situation, this publication provides a number of recommendations, particularly the following: the need for ICT policies to be included in economic policies envisaging economic growth and increased employment; for suppliers, emphasis should be placed on innovation, especially in programmes to research and develop new technologies; from the demand standpoint, particular attention should be paid to the formation of ICT capacities and to the promotion of same by companies and individuals, specifically through the increasing availability of online government services; the continual development of broadband services and digital content should be encouraged; and, lastly, it is important to increase trust in the safety of information systems, effectively promoting the fight against spam.
