Portugal and ITU internationalise program ''e.School''


The signing ceremony of the of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the Government of Portugal, through the Minister of Public Works, Transports and Communications (MOPTC), was held on 29 September 2010 in Lisbon at the Foundation Orient Museum. This MoU aims at promoting the program ''e.School International'' which task will be integrated into the initiative of the ITU ''Connect a School, Connect a Community.''

The internationalization of the Portuguese program ''e.School'' arises from a commitment made at the fourth World Telecommunication Policy Forum (WTPF-09), which was formally presented by Portugal and by ITU during the last World Telecommunications Development Conference (WTDC) held in Hyderabad (India) from 24 May to 4 June 2010.

Through the project "e.School International", which in the first phase will cover 20 developing countries, Portugal will keep one school per country totally connected to the Internet and equipped with information and communication technologies (ICT) by delivering the following materials, in addition to supporting the implementation of the project: laptops, including software and educational contents; smart boards, connected to laptops to allow for interactive learning; equipment for broadband Internet connection.
