Workshop on NGN - Nicosia

A Euro-Mediterranean Regulators Group (EMERG) workshop on next generation networks (NGN) was held last 23-24 April in Nicosia, Cyprus, organised by that country's regulator, the Office of the Commissioner of Electronic Communications and Postal Regulation (OCECPR). The aim was to provoke debate about NGNs, specifically how each country frames regulation of access and investment in NGNs. The event was attended by representatives from the Palestinian Authority (Authority Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology - MTIT), Egypt (National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority - NTRA), Italy (Autorità per le Garanzie nelle Comunicazioni - AGCOM), Jordan (Telecommunication Regulation Commission - TRC), Lebanon (Telecommunications Regulatory Authority - TRA), Israel (Ministry of Communication - MoC), Portugal (Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações), Greece (National Telecommunications and Post Commission of Greece - EETT), and by a team of consultants from New Approaches to Telecommunications Policy (NATP3-Regulaid). The workshop also included open sessions, counting participation by representatives of Cypriot (CYTA, Cablenet) and Italian (Fastweb) operators and Cisco. The next EMERG workshop will be held on 22-23 May in Cairo and cover universal service.
