Use of 3G and 4G Internet on board aircraft

On 14 November 2013, the European Commission (EC) adopted new rules to allow 3rd and 4th generation (3G and 4G) Internet access on board aircraft in the airspace of the European Union (EU) - use of the 3G mobile communications system (UMTS) and long term evolution (LTE).

Until now only 2nd generation technology (2G) - Global system for mobile communications (GSM) - has been permissible on-board aircraft flying in the EU, which is impracticable for sending large amounts of data.
