/ Updated on 09.12.2013

At the end of 3rd Quarter 2013 (3Q13), there were 3.16 million1 subscribers to the subscription television service in Portugal, 13 thousand more subscribers than in the previous quarter and 49 thousand more than in the same period of 2012 (3Q12).

The growth reported in the service stems from offers supported over optical fibre (FTTH/B) and over the public telephone network (xDSL), where the number of subscribers increased by 19 and 14 thousand respectively, over the quarter. In contrast, the number of subscribers to the cable TV service and direct to home technology (DTH) during this period declined by 1.1 and 0.5 percent, respectively, corresponding to 16 thousand and 3 thousand fewer subscribers to each of these services.

By technology type, the cable TV distribution service accounted for 44.9 percent of total subscribers, xDSL 20.8 percent, DTH 20 percent and optical fibre (FTTH/B) 14.3 percent.

It is estimated that 76.4 percent of subscription TV subscribers received their service as part of a bundle, while the number of bundles with STVS increased by 2.1 percent in 3Q13.

Grupo ZON Optimus2 reports the largest share of subscription television subscribers (49.3 percent)3. PT Comunicações (PTC) and Cabovisão follow with 41 percent and 7.2 percent, respectively.

From January to September 2013, total revenues from the TVS service (stand-alone and bundles that include this service) totalled 960.5 million euros (increasing 3.5 percent compared to the same period of 2012).

Average monthly revenue derived from bundles that include the STV service fell 0.8 euros/month (2.3 percent) year-on-year. Meanwhile, average revenue related to the separable TV service increased by 1.4 euros (4.4 percent).

At the end of 3Q13, about 52.8 percent of households with subscription TV had over 80 channels and about 19.5 percent had access to premium channels, 3 percentage points less than in 3Q12.
