Greece takes over presidency of the European Union on 01.01.2014

Greece has taken over the presidency of the European Union (EU) for the fifth time in its history, holding the office from 1 January to 30 June 2014.

The new presidential triumvirate (a system created in 2009 by the Treaty of Lisbon) will therefore be made up of Greece, Lithuania (former President) and Ireland. Italy will take over the presidency from Greece in the second half of 2014.

In cooperation with its partners, the Greek Presidency will focus on three objectives: the development of the EU, preserving and strengthening the European model; safeguarding the irrevocability of the common currency, on a solid and sustainable basis; and reinforcing EU democratic legitimacy and expanding civil rights.
