NETmundial 2014 - conclusions

ANACOM has taken part in the Global Multistakeholder Meeting on the Future of Internet Governance (NETmundial 2014), which took place on 23 and 24 April 2014, in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

NETmundial was set up in response to the controversial debate on Internet Governance, which has been taking place at various international forums, exposing differences between different states and other participants over sensitive areas such as infrastructure access, network neutrality, online copyright protection, and management of critical Internet resources (e.g., domains and IP addresses) and privacy.

This particular meeting was triggered by issues arising over privacy violation, after the President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, on the pretext of news published on practices of mass espionage, called for a thorough reform of Internet Governance and of key institutions, such as the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Therefore, following an agreement reached in late 2013 between President Dilma Rousseff and Fadi Chehade, President and CEO of ICANN, it was decided to hold NETmundial with two objectives:

1. agree principles of Internet Governance;

2. establish a roadmap for the future development of the Internet ecosystem.

NETmundial agreed on a compromise document on these two subjects, to which it gave the name "Multistakeholder Statement of Sao Paulo". The result of the meeting, although not binding, will certainly be an important reference in future Internet policy discussions.

The meeting was attended by Governments, the technical community, academia, civil society and the private sector, all on equal terms and all having had the opportunity to comment and suggest changes to the drafts of the Statement of Sao Paulo.
