The number of fixed network main accesses was 4.31 million at the end of the second quarter of this year, 0.37% less than at the end of the previous quarter, according to data from the Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM). The service's penetration rate was at 41.74 accesses per hundred inhabitants. Some 93.68% of all accesses were operated by companies from the Grupo Portugal Telecom.
During the same period, 3.25 billion minutes originated in the fixed networks, resulting from 752 million telephone calls made. This traffic volume, counted in minutes, represents a decrease of 5.06% over the previous quarter and a decrease of 13.93% year-on-year.
The market share of the new fixed telephone service operators, measured in traffic minutes, rose to 11.21% at the end of the second quarter of this year, versus 10.19% at the end of the first quarter. The share of the Grupo Portugal Telecom was 88.79% of all traffic minutes originating in Portugal's fixed network, as opposed to 89.81% at the end of the first quarter of this year.
Some 8.67% of all minutes derived from the use of indirect access. This percentage has remained stable since the end of the first quarter of 2002.
Most calls made in the fixed network, 96%, are to national numbers.
During the same period, average call length increased slightly, to 4.32 minutes for national calls, 4.19 minutes for outgoing international calls, 2.67 minutes for calls made by indirect access and 4.58 minutes for calls made by direct access.
At the end of the second quarter of 2003 there were 26 licensed providers of fixed telephone service, of which 11 were operational. Of these, 2 provided service only via direct access, 2 only via indirect access and 7 using both access types.
A total of 101,695 fixed network numbers had been ported by the end of June - an increase of 21.17% over the figure for March.
