Evolution of fixed telephone service prices 1998-2003

A study on the evolution of fixed telephone service (FTS) prices practised by the national historic operator (PT Comunicações) between 1998 and 2003 is now available. It considered the prices for installation and monthly rental of the analogic network line, as well as the prices of local, regional, long-distance (domestic) and international communications to fixed networks.

Conclusions of this study indicate that the prices of local and regional calls were subject to real drops of 4.8% and 36.2% respectively during the period in question, while the real drops in the prices of long distance and international communications were 64.7% and 48.1% respectively. The price of installing a new telephone line has remained unchanged since February 1998, resulting in a real reduction of 15.1%; the monthly rental price rose by 4.2% in real terms, while the price of the FTS basket decreased, also in real terms, by 15.7%.
