World Post Day - 9 October


The World Post Day is celebrated today, as a tribute to the Bern Treaty signing, on 9 October 1874, which established the Universal Postal Union (UPU). 

In this context, a message allusive to this day has been revealed by the Director General of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) International Bureau, Thomas E. Leavey, and it was also introduced a new letter-writing competition addressed to young people up to 15 years old, with the theme – I am writing to you to tell you how we, the young, can fight against poverty. The deadline for receiving the letters is 31 January 2004.

The public postal operator CTT – Correios de Portugal, participates in these celebrations, promoting a solemn session, in Lisbon, at the Fundação Portuguesa das Comunicações (Portuguese Communications Foundation), as well as the introduction of the philatelic issues “History of the Glass in Portugal” and “150 years of the First Portuguese Stamp”, the inauguration of several exhibitions at the referred Foundation’s museum, which will be open till  the 28th February 2004 and yet, the prize presentation of the 2003 letter-writing competition winners and the opening of a new letter-writing competition, at national level, promoted by the postal operator and ANACOM.

The UPU is an intergovernmental organization, at present with 189 countries, in which Portugal is a founder member, promoting the renovation and development of the postal sector, world wide.
