Total revenues from postal services in Portugal rose to 185.6 million euros in 4th quarter 2014, representing an increase of 10.8% over the previous quarter, but a decline from 4th quarter 2013 of 0.5%. Average revenue per postal item (85 eurocents) rose by 5.5% over the quarter and by 4% in year-on-year terms.
In 4th quarter 2014, total traffic from postal services comprised about 219 million items, corresponding to an increase of 5.1% compared to the previous quarter - as explained by the seasonal effect of the Christmas holiday. Year-on-year, traffic declined by 4.4%, driven by the trend towards postage substitution by electronic communications.
On a per capita basis, each inhabitant sent an average of 20.9 postal items.
Correspondence made up about 77.5% of all traffic distributed, with 10% comprising direct mail, 8% editorial mail and the rest comprising postage parcels. In the period being reported, 96% of the traffic was destined for the national market.
About 85% of postal traffic is encompassed by the universal service, with pricing and levels of quality of service regulated by ANACOM, and about 50.2% is made up of bulk mail.
Grupo CTT - Correios de Portugal reports a share of 94.4% of total postal traffic, and a 32.9% share of express mail traffic.
In 4th quarter 2014 there were 11 undertakings providing postal services within the scope of the universal service in Portugal. Outside the scope of the universal service, there were 58 undertakings in operation.
The number of access points, where customers can deposit postal items for distribution, rose to 13,147 (an increase of 3.3% year-on-year and of 1.9% over the quarter).
At the end of the year, there were 13,900 people employed in the operation of postal services in Portugal.
