ANACOM took part in the World Summit on the Information Society Forum (WSIS Forum 2016), held from 2-6 May 2016 in Geneva, Switzerland. This annual meeting is co-organised by the ITU, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, the United Nations Development Programme and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.
WSIS Forum 2016 was chaired by Daniel Sepulveda of the USA and focused on the topic of ‘WSIS Action Lines: supporting the implementation of sustainable development goals’. This year’s WSIS Forum was thus shaped per the results of last December’s High Level Meeting at UN headquarters to review implementation of results from the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) and by the Agenda 2030 for sustainable development, likewise agreed on in 2015.
Note that this forum aims to encourage discussion and sharing of knowledge of various stakeholders regarding implementation of the WSIS results.
WSIS Forum 2016 included a number of high-level policy sessions on 3 and 4 May. The Minister for Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, took part in one of the HL sessions; his speech focused on three key areas: scientific research, stronger digital skills and international cooperation.
