In its statement of 15 September 2016, BEREC supports the objectives set out in the Commission Communication "Connectivity for a Competitive Digital Single Market - towards a European Gigabit Society", which identifies strategic objectives and key measures to promote connectivity.

Referring to the proposal to establish the European Electronic Communications Code, BEREC underlines the need to preserve the successful approach of a framework which, over the last 20 years, has ensured promotion of both competition and investment in infrastructure, as well as a high level of protection for end-users.

BEREC also considers that it is important to preserve the ablity of national reugaltory authorities to intervene where necessary, taking due account of the specific market circumstances, and that, in this respect, any form of unnecessary centralisation should be avoided.

BEREC will now proceed to a thorough examination of the Commission's proposals and will release an extensive analysis of the relevant provisions.
