Meeting of ECC WG FM Drones - April 2017

WG FM has set up an Austria-chaired correspondence group called WG FM Drones to produce a report on the systems commonly known as drones, specifically on technical and regulatory aspects of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and spectrum regulation needs.

The second meeting of WG RM Drones was held in Lisbon on 6-7 April 2017, attended by 18 participants.

The main issues considered at that gathering were the proposed report on UAS and frequency bands for UAS.

Regarding the UAS report, “Technical and Regulatory Aspects and the Needs for Spectrum Regulation for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS)”, note that it was based on a two-part CEPT questionnaire, on spectrum regulation and aeronautic regulation, which was responded to by CEPT administrations and other stakeholders. One of the ideas inserted into the proposed report is that UAS may eventually use frequencies identified in Recommendation ERC 25-10 for downloading video (payload); also, the frequency bands exempt from radio licensing which can be used by UAS were made clear. The proposed UAS report resulting from this meeting was completed by correspondence and will be submitted to the next WG FM meeting (May 2017) so it can be approved for public consultation.

The proposal for the UAS report does not include new frequency bands for UAS, specifically for professional use. A document was finalised with some considerations about possible frequency bands for UAS, to be considered at the next WG FM meeting.
