3rd meeting of the expert group for the International Telecommunications Regulations - January 2018

Geneva hosted last 17-19 January the third meeting of EG-ITR.

The group analysed various contributions for the meeting. In this regard, Portugal presented on behalf of the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT) the contribution that had been agreed on at the December 2017 meeting of the ITU Policy Committee (Com-ITU). Given the profound differences concerning the International Telecommunications Regulations (ITR), Europe considered that a new World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT) to review the ITR should not be held in the near future, as that would once again expose the division within the ITU, with the negative repercussions such a situation would have on the Union’s reputation.

The group also debated the wording of the final report, a document that will be very relevant for the decision to make at the 2018 Plenipotentiary Conference regarding a new WCIT.
