WG FM Drones meeting - August 2018

The fourth meeting of WG FM Drones1 was held last 29-30 August in Prague, Czech Republic, attended by 18 participants.

The following stand out among issues debated at the meeting:

  • frequency bands for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS);
  • new work item (WI) for UAS;
  • proposal for a new report on UAS.

Per the classification of radiocommunication services from the Radio Regulations (RR), UAS are limited to operating in the scope of mobile service instead of aeronautic service. Note that UAS communications with air traffic control (ATC) operate under aeronautic service.

The following frequency bands are currently under consideration for use in UAS:

  • 1880-1900 MHz (only for government use);
  • 1900-1920 MHz;
  • 2010-2110 MHz and 2200-2500 MHz (programme making and special events – PMSE);
  • 5150-5250 MHz and 5000–5010 MHz (wireless access systems/radio local area networks – WAS/RLAN);

1 WG FM established the WG FM Drones correspondence group chaired by Austria to prepare a report on the systems ordinarily called drones, namely about techical and regulatory aspects of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and spectrum regulation needs. The group has already produced ECC Report 268 on “Technical and Regulatory Aspects and the Needs for Spectrum Regulation for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS)”, published on 9 February 2018 and available at ECO - Document informationhttps://www.ecodocdb.dk/document/1034.
