ANACOM's Chairman calls for urgent renewal of submarine cables in the Azores


The Chairman of ANACOM, João Cadete de Matos, was in Ponta Delgada on 7 December at the invitation of the Regional Secretary of Transport and Public Works, Ana Cunha, at a session presenting the "Technical and Economic Study of the New CAM Submarine Network (Mainland - Azores - Madeira)" conducted by Globaleda, represented at this session by the Administrator Paulo Moniz.

The Chairman of ANACOM took the opportunity to congratulate the study's authors and to underline the study's importance in identifying the strategic options available and in supporting the decision on renewing the submarine cables linking the Azores and Madeira to Mainland Portugal -  a decision which needs to be taken with utmost urgency.

In statements to the press at the end of the session, the Chairman of ANACOM highlighted the importance of the reasoning presented in the study, pointing to the development of an independent solution, which should be sponsored by the Government of the Republic and by the Regional Governments. The Chairman highlighted several strategic aspects raised by the study, such as the use of submarine cables for seismic protection and for oceanic research, as well as the potential of this solution to facilitate transcontinental links between Europe and America.
