Survey of the Mobile Networks? Quality of Service - QoS-GSM 2003

Conclusions of the survey of the GSM mobile networks? quality of service (QoS-GSM), carried out by ANACOM for the fourth consecutive year, indicate that the GSM mobile networks of the operators Optimus, TMN and Vodafone offer a good level of coverage and performance.

The three usual indicators were analysed - coverage, accessibility and audio quality - and the methodology used was the same as in the previous ANACOM studies, although there were some innovations in sample calculation to ensure that the results obtained reflect the mobile networks? overall performance.

Audio quality was down slightly over previous years. Even so, 99% of test calls registered average audio quality values of good or fair. Regarding accessibility, there were no major differences between road arteries and urban areas. Lastly, good levels were registered for the coverage indicator.

The study was carried out between 3 November and 9 December 2003, involving 14,790 test calls made in all mainland district capitals, with the collection area also covering the Lisbon and Oporto metropolitan regions and main road arteries on the mainland. The population sample thus corresponds to 40% of total Portuguese population.
