GLS Group - Paris

/ Updated on 01.08.2006

At its last meeting, the GLS group comprising the notifying administrations for systems in the European satellite radionavigation project known as Galileo finalised the text of the draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on filings (requests to the Radiocommunications Sector of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU-R) for publication of space system arrangements) concerning Galileo, taking into account the comments submitted by the various administrations and/or associated entities.

This MoU is an instrument that will enable Galileo notifying administrations to grant by means of a licence the right to use the ITU-R notified frequencies to the future Galileo management entity, which will in turn grant it by licence to the future system operator.

The MoU text was revised. The administrations have until 1 May to submit comments on the new text and to indicate the respective decision as regards signing the MoU.

The meeting, the group?s last, was held on 16 March at the National Space Studies Centre (CNES) in Paris and was attended by 15 delegates from various administrations (France, Portugal, United Kingdom, Sweden and Italy) and representatives of the Joint Undertaking (EC/ GJU), European Space Agency (ESA), ASTRIUM (Germany), Defence Ministry (France), CNES and the German Space Agency (GSA).

The first meeting of this MoU?s Steering Committee will hopefully take place before next summer.
