ECC TG3 - Stuttgart

/ Updated on 17.07.2006

The 14th meeting of the working group ECC TG3-UWB (ultra wide band) was held on 15-18 May 2006 in the German city of Stuttgart. This group is mandated to produce regulatory solutions for devices that use UWB technology in bands below 10.6 GHz.

The meeting saw finalisation of the proposed decision for UWB systems with GPR/WPR (ground probing radar/wall probing radar) viewing, which will be forwarded to the next meeting of the ECC group, to be held in July, with a view to subsequent public consultation. The technical report with the compatibility studies was revised, though some issues are still pending, specifically the evaluation of the impact of GPR/WPR systems on broadcasting service.

There were no developments in the proposed decision for WPR (building material analysis) systems. However, the report with the compatibility studies was revised, specifically the sections on compatibility with radio-astronomy service, with radars and with UMTS in the 2.7 GHz extension band.

Also debated were a number of documents concerning UWB communication devices, mostly related to decision ECC/DEC/(06)04, approved at the last ECC meeting. The possibility of using UWB devices on board aircraft was also considered, with indication that a consolidated report on the subject should be submitted by the civil aviation authorities before same can be debated in the ECC TG3 group. The possible production of a regulatory solution for UWB devices inside automotive vehicles was another new issue under discussion, though in order for it to be dealt with by the group a mandate will first have to be sent by the ECC group.

The determination of requirements for the DAA (detect and avoid) mitigation technique, which includes generic UWB applications from 3.1 to 4.8 GHz, was debated and will continue development. There were no developments with regard to determination of the LDC (low duty cycle) mitigation technique.
