Meeting of the Communications Committee of European Commission - Brussels


Brussels hosted last 15 October the 32nd meeting of the Communications Committee (COCOM). Highlights included presentation of the proposed recommendation on harmonised regulation of termination charges in the European Union (EU), bearing in mind main developments in this area since the public consultation.

Also presented was the proposed recommendation on next generation access (NGA). The European Commission emphasised that this is a new phase at broadband level, in so far as the EU is facing a unique opportunity to increase competition. Regarding the procedures under Article 7 of the Framework Directive, the EC reported that it will continue to send the ''no comments'' letters.

The Commission also presented the following documents: information on broadband, including mobile broadband, whose data refer to 24 September 2008 (suggesting consultation of the ''Broadband performance index'' on the EU website The Broadband Performance Index (BPI)http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/eeurope/i2010/bpi/index_en.htm; main aspects of the questionnaire on implementation of 112, the single European emergency number; most recent data on the 116 numbering range; and the current state of the switchover to digital television in the EU. The Commission also considered the document on the terms for the working group to be established for one year, which should focus on analysing the process of selecting candidates for pan-European mobile satellite service (MSS) systems.

The next COCOM meeting has been scheduled for this coming 10 December.
