The European Commission oversaw last 23 January in Brussels a seminar on the launch of two new studies about the postal sector, one on the role of regulators in a more competitive postal market in 2009, and the other on postal market performance since 1997.
The first study is meant to analyse the role of national regulators and regulation in a more competitive postal market (note that the postal market will be liberalised in most European Union member States by 31 December 2010, as stipulated in Directive 2008/6/EC). The aim of the second study is to identify, describe and analyse performance trends in the sector and their impact on sectors associated to the postal sector.
