Applications to the ITU Youth Forum - deadline 27 March

A national process is underway, closing on 27 March 2009, to select four university students (two female and two males) to join the Portuguese government's nomination to the Youth Forum promoted by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Of these four, the ITU will select the two (one female and one male) who will attend the forum, which will take place as part the larger international communications event - ITU Telecom World 2009 - from  5 to 9 October in Geneva (Switzerland).

The event involves the participation of several hundred university students from ITU member countries, giving them the opportunity to gain access to inside information on innovation in the area of information and communications technology, as well as information on how they can contribute to the development of their countries and communities. It is also intended to promote interaction between young people, the ITU, its members and the industry, with the goal of drawing up a declaration of principles and an action plan that will contribute to the ITU's development plans.

In Portugal, ANACOM is responsible for delivering national applications, as representative of the Portuguese administration in the ITU. Applicants must be between 18 and 23 years of age, have Portuguese nationality, be able to communicate in English, French or Spanish and have completed two years of study at a university or Technical institution by 30 June  2009.

Applications must be delivered to the University, within the prescribed deadline and bearing in mind that applications must be forwarded to the ITU by 27 March. To apply, students should submit the duly completed application form, curriculum vitae and a short composition (250 to 500 words) responding to the question: What is the biggest problem in your community and how would you use information communication technologies to solve it?. The text should be written in one of the ITU official languages (English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian or Chinese).

Universities will then forward selected applications to ANACOM together with a letter of recommendation, explaining the basis for their selection and declaring that the applicant will be exempted from classes during the event (from 5 to 9 October 2009 and time travel).
