Eighth meeting of Regulatel co-directors - Havana


The eighth meeting of the co-directors of Regulatel (the Latin American Forum of Telecommunications Regulatory Authorities, in which Portugal and Spain also participate) was held last 9-12 February in Havana, Cuba. The aim of the meeting was to review the activities from 2008 on, taking into account the 2009 action plan and the objectives to be reached by each of the working groups (WGs) - WG Regulatory Convergence and Harmonisation, WG Regional Roaming, WG User Protection and Quality of Service, WG Broadband and VoIP, WG Sustainability and WG Capacity-building and Training.

This meeting was followed by the Forum between Regulatel and the Iberian American Association of Research Centres and Telecommunications Companies (AHCIET), which also gathered telecoms operators from Latin America. It reviewed the activities undertaken in 2008 and saw presentation of the initiatives for 2009. Highlights included the discussion on regulatory challenges in Latin America, particularly issues such as universal access to telecommunication services, broadband in remote areas and the convergence of technologies and services.

Lastly, the Telecommunications Regulators Symposium was also held - an event framed in the Informatics Convention.
